What would be the null and alternative hypothesis?

Original claim: Use a 0.01 significance level to test the the claim that the proportion of subjects who respond in favor is equal to 0.5. This was based on stem cell Research. If that's the original claim, what would the null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis be? Also, would this be a one tail test or a two tail test?|||claim: the proportion of subjects who respond in favor is equal to 0.5.

The claim is then p=0.5. The opposite of the claim is p is not 0.5.

The null hypothesis always includes the = sign so the claim is the null hypothesis.

null: p=0.5, alternative: p not=0.5.

This is two-tailed since the alternative is true when p is significantly different from 0.5 in either direction.
